Box Score WESTVILLE, Ind. – Cassidy Deno (Otterbein, Ind./Benton Central) poured in 28 points and Ellie Michalski (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) added a double-double to lead the No. 13 Purdue University Northwest women's basketball team to a 85-75 nonleague victory over visiting Grace College Saturday at the James. B. Dworkin Student Services & Activities Center.
Deno (Otterbein, Ind./Benton Central) finished 9-of-18 from the field and added five assists, while Michalski (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) added 13 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.
Senior Darien Thompson (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) added 17 points and four assists and sophomore Michaela Kikendall (Morristown, Ind./Morristown) (Morristown, Ind./Morristown) added 14 points and six boards in the win.
Purdue Northwest (2-0), who held a 44-35 advantage at the break, built its largest lead in the third quarter to go up by as many as 21 with 7:04 to go in the fourth.
But the Lancers (2-2) fought back, going on a 14-2 run to cut PNW' lead to just nine, 78-69, with 3:30 to play. But the Pride would make its next 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch – led by Thompson (5 for 6) – to seal its final game of the James B. Dworkin Tip-Off Classic.
PNW finished the game 25-of-32 from the free-throw line compared to 11-of-19 for Grace. The Pride shot a crisp 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the field, while the Lancers were held to just 34.6 percent (27-of-78) for the game.
The Pride also won the battle on the boards, 46-39, with seven different players corralling at least four boards each.
The Lancers fired up 36 3-pointers for the game, making 10 (27.8 percent), while PNW finished 4-for-12, led by Deno and Kikendall with two makes each.
Purdue Northwest returns to action Tuesday, Nov. 8, when the Pride travel to Indianapolis, Ind., to take on the defending NAIA champion and preseason favorite No. 1 Marian University Knights. Game time is set for 6 p.m. CT.
