Week at a Glance: 1/13-1/19

As the PNW 2020 spring semester begins, here’s what the Women’s and Men’s Basketball teams have on their schedule this week!

HAMMOND, Ind. -- 1/16 - Ashland at PNW
 
The Pride return to the Fitness and Recreation Center on the Hammond campus to host the Ashland Eagles on Thursday evening. The women's game will tipoff at 5 p.m. (CT) and will be followed by the men's game tipoff at 7 p.m. (CT). 
 
PNW Women's Basketball will come in with a 4-11 overall record, including a 3-4 GLIAC conference record. They were last seen on Saturday, January 11, when they fell 75-55 to Michigan Tech. Statistical leaders on the season for the Pride include Savaya Brockington, who averages team-highs in points per game (12.9), rebounds per game (4.4), assists per game (3.9), steals per game (1.5) and minutes per game (33.7) amongst other categories. Other leaders include Anjel Galbraith, averaging 9.8 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.5 steals in 33.1 minutes per game. 
 
Danielle Nennig continues to appear all over the statsheet for the Pride. She is currently recording 9.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.2 steals and 28.4 minutes per game. Molly DeValkenaere and Kennedy Jackson have stepped up their play for Head Coach Courtney Locke recently as well. DeValkenaere is averaging 8.7 points and 3.4 rebounds per game in conference play to go along with her team-leading 24 free-throws made. Jackson has averaged 30.6 minutes per game in conference play and has been a key defender for Locke.
 
PNW Men's Basketball will come in with a 6-9 overall record, 1-6 in the GLIAC. They were last seen on Saturday, January 11, when they fought until the end before being defeated by Michigan Tech 84-77. Statistical leaders include Jyrus Freels, who has team-highs with 193 points, 95 rebounds, 87 made field-goals and 434 minutes played.
 
Head Coach Boomer Roberts has had numerous players, including Freels, step up since GLIAC conference play began. Anthony Barnard is averaging 17.0 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.6 assists and has recorded five total steals in his 29.0 minutes per game. Timothy Gilmore has started the last five games and has been the Pride's go-to weapon from three-point territory, connecting on 12 shots from behind the arc in conference play. Jordan Doss has been good for 10.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.0 assists in his 17.6 minutes per game in conference play. Gabe Toombs, Gregory Boyle and Xavier Allison have been key assets off the bench play for Roberts as well.    
 
Ashland Women's Basketball will travel to Hammond with a 15-0 record, 7-0 in the GLIAC, and the no.3-ranked team in the country. They were last seen on Saturday, January 11, when they beat Davenport at home 101-72. The senior-led Eagles roster is filled with lethal shooters, including five players who have made at least 15 three-pointers this season, and four players averaging double-figures in scoring for Head Coach Kari Pickens. Jodi Johnson, who has been named GLIAC South Women's Basketball Player of the Week three times so far this season, leads the way with 17.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in 30.9 minutes per game. Sara Loomis, twice this season named GLIAC South Player of the Week, averages 16.9 points and a team-high 9.1 rebounds in her 25.7 minutes per game. Sophomore Hallie Heidemann leads the Eagles with 42 three-pointers made and Renee Stimpert averages a team-high 7.9 assists per game.

The Eagles men come to town sporting a 7-8 overall record, 0-7 in the GLIAC, and were last seen falling to Davenport 61-48 on Saturday, January 11. Head Coach John Ellenwood has three players averaging double-figures in scoring, including Drew Noble (16.1), Rodrick Caldwell (14.5) and Aaron Thompson (12.3). Caldwell is the Eagles' outside-shooting threat, connecting on 34 three-pointers so far this season. Ethan Conley isn't far behind Caldwell, as he is shooting 46.7% from behind the arc with 28 three-pointers. Thompson (7.3) and Noble (6.0) lead Ashland in rebounding per game, and Dylan Beaugard leads in assists with 3.0 per game. Caldwell, Noble and Thompson all average above 30 minutes per game for Ellenwood.  
 
1/18 – Wayne State at PNW
 
The Pride will then host the Wayne State Warriors on Saturday afternoon at the FNRC in Hammond. The women's game will be tipping off at 1 p.m. (CT) and be followed by the men's game tipoff at 3 p.m. (CT).
 
Wayne State Women's and Men's Basketball will be coming to Hammond fresh off their Thursday evening game at Parkside in Kenosha. The women come into Thursday's game with an 8-7 overall record, 2-5 in the GLIAC. The Warriors last played on Saturday, January 11, when they were defeated at home by Grand Valley State 67-41. Sadia Johnson leads Wayne State in multiple statistical categories, including averaging 13.5 points per game, shooting 46-54 from the free-throw line and connecting on 23 three-point field goals on the season. Grace George averages 12.5 points, a team-high 9.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists and team-highs with 1.7 steals and 29.7 minutes per game. Nastassja Chambers is the Warriors' third player averaging in double-figures in scoring for Head Coach Carrie Lohr, recording 10.6 points per game. Chambers has made 40-46 of her free-throw attempts this season for a team-high 87%. She is also averaging 2.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists in her 26.7 minutes per game.
 
The men will be coming into Kenosha with a 4-7 overall record, 1-6 in the GLIAC. They were last seen on Saturday, January 11, when they were narrowly defeated at home by Grand Valley State 71-64. Oakland University transfer Brailen Neely leads the Warriors in numerous statistical categories, is averaging 20.5 points, 5.9 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 1.6 steals and has played every single minute in every game so far this season. Neely is one of four Wayne State players scoring in double-figures. Karim Murray averages 16.9, James Gordon 12.3 and Antonio Marshall 10.1. All four players play at least 33 minutes per game on average for Head Coach David Greer. Neely, Gordon and Marshall have combined to make 62 three-pointers so far this season. Gordon leads the team with a 7.5 rebound-per game average as well.
