WESTVILLE, Ind. – The Purdue University Northwest women's basketball team opened the 2016-17 campaign with a 58-43 victory over Cornerstone in its opening game of the James B. Dworkin Tip-Off Classic in Westville.

The Pride (1-0) will take on Grace College (1-1), a 90-43 winner over Robert Morris, in Saturday at 2 p.m. CT at the James B. Dworkin Student Services & Activities Complex to conclude play in the eight-game, men's and women's tournament.

Freshman Shae Rhonehouse (Fremont, Ind./Fremont) (Fremont, Ind./Fremont) led the way for PNW, scoring a game-high 19 points and sophomore forward Ellie Michalski (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) chipped in 11 points in the Pride's season opener, adding six rebounds and four blocks.

Senior Darien Thompson (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) added nine points, four steals, and two assists and classmate Cassidy Deno (Otterbein, Ind./Benton Central) (Otterbein, Ind./Benton Central) had eight points, four assist and 11 boards in the balanced team effort.

PNW led 25-22 at the break before pulling away with a 17-point third quarter while holding the Eagles to just nine points in the frame, as the Pride finished the game shooting 44.4 percent (24-for-54) from the field compared to just 23.1 percent (18-for-78) for Cornerstone, who hit just 2-for-23 from downtown.

Nine players reached the scoring column for PNW, who saw all 11 players see action in the win.

Jesse Sheridan led Cornerstone with 11 points in the setback.

Rhonehouse finished the game a crisp 8-of-14 from the field and added six boards and an assist in her collegiate debut and Michalski was a solid 5-of-8 from the floor.
