Box Score HAMMOND, Ind. – Seniors Cassidy Deno (Otterbein, Ind./Benton Central) and Darien Thompson (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) both hit the 20-point plateau to lead the No. 13 Purdue University Northwest women's basketball team to a 90-64 conference victory over visiting Calumet St. Joseph Wednesday night at the Fitness and Recreation Center.
Deno (Otterbein, Ind./Benton Central) netted a season-high 29 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor – including a 7-of-11 performance from downtown – and added six assists to lead PNW, who improved to 4-2 overall and opened Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play with a win.
Thompson (Anderson, Ind./Anderson) added a season-best 22 points on 8-of-13 from the field – 4-of-5 from 3-point land – and added four steals and three assists in an all-around game for the Pride. Junior post Ellie Michalski (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) added nine points and senior Katie Wampler (Scottsburg, Ind./Scottsburg) (Scottsburg, Ind./Scottsburg) chipped in nine points and five boards.
Purdue Northwest opened the game with a Deno layup, but CCSJ (0-7, 0-1) would take a brief lead when Brittni Kisul drained a triple and then a jumper to make it 5-2, Crimson Wave. Purdue Northwest would answer, going on a 13-2 run over the next two minutes to take a 13-7 lead.
PNW would never trail after that, leading 33-21 after the first quarter and 46-34 at the break.
The Pride would make its biggest run in the third quarter, outscoring CCSJ 27-13 to take a commanding 73-47 lead after three quarters.
Purdue Northwest shot 49.2 percent (32-of-65) for the game and 51.7 percent (15-of-29) from the 3-point line for the game, compared to 45.8 percent (27-of-59) and 27.3 percent (3-of-11) for the Crimson Wave.
PNW took advantage of 20 CCSJ giveaways, scoring 21 points while committing just 12 turnovers.
Purdue Northwest sophomore guard Heather Burton (Valparaiso, Ind./Washington Township) (Valparaiso, Ind./Washington Township) added eight points – one shy of her career high -- and rookie Bayley Goodman (Fowler, Ind./Benton Central) (Fowler, Ind./Benton Central) added a career-best six points in the win.
Kisul led the Crimson Wave with 18 points and 12 boards in the setback.
PNW returns to action Saturday when the Pride travel to Davenport, Iowa, for a 1 p.m. CT matchup at CCAC foe St. Ambrose University.
